Frequently Asked Questions

Cymraeg

Can I design my web site from scratch?

No. You will be given a choice of templates to choose from and will be asked to insert your own content and images (or you can use some of our clipart) into that template.

Do I get free web space too?

Yes, it comes as part of the whole Cobwebs Online Package but can only be accessed via the website - no other sites can be hosted here. For information on free web space for other not-for-profit sites contact Cobwebs on cobwebs@bridgend.gov.uk.

How do I apply to get a free web site on Cobwebs Online?

Connect to the Internet, and load up your browser. Type www.cobwebs.uk.net in the address bar at the top of the page. When the Cobwebs Online web site appears on your screen click on "Apply for your own site " or "to start". Then follow the instructions that will appear on screen until your application is completed.

How do I update my website?

Go to www.cobwebs.uk.net where you will find an option on the front page which says "Edit your site". Click on the words ‘Edit your site’ and a box will pop up asking for your username and password. Key these in and you will be faced with the steps you used to create your website. A grey column will appear down the left hand side of the page on step 1 once you have a page created - you can select different pages to edit or delete by clicking on the appropriate buttons. Then just follow the on screen instructions until Cobwebs Online tells you that you can preview your site (its very important to follow the steps through to step 5 or all your updates will be lost).

How do create my web site?

Cobwebs Online will create your website for you after it has asked you specific questions. When you apply on the website to use Cobwebs Online you will be asked to key in a username and password (you should always keep your password private). Once you have applied you can then go to www.cobwebs.uk.net where you will find another option on the front page which says "Edit your site". Click on the words ‘Edit your site’ and a box will pop up asking for your username and password. Key these in and you can start following the instructions on screen to get your website created.

How many pages can I have?

At the moment we are not setting a limit on this, although we may need to impose one at a later date.

How much does it cost?

The system is free to use for any qualifying organisation.

I don’t know how to update my web page - Help!

To update your website go to the front page of www.cobwebs.uk.net and click on "Edit your site" - the system will ask you for your username and password (if you haven’t applied to the project yet you will have to do so first in order to get your username and password) - if you key these in correctly you will then be presented with step 1 of the updating process. Follow the on screen instructions until the system tells you "Your WebSite has been Created"

I filled in the application form and I’ve just received an e-mail to say that my website is now live. How do I create my web page?

To create or update your website go to the front page of www.cobwebs.uk.net and click on "Edit your site" or "to edit" - the system will ask you for your username and password (if you haven’t applied to the project yet you will have to do so first in order to get your username and password) - if you key these in correctly you will then be presented with step 1 of the updating process. Follow the on screen instructions until the system tells you "Your WebSite has been Created"

I have forgotten my username / password - what is it?

E-mail the system administrator on cobwebs@bridgend.gov.uk informing them of your problem. The correct username / password will be e-mailed to the e-mail address held by the system (in contact details) in two separate e-mails (for security reasons).

I have put an image onto my website which I want to use on more than one page - do I have to keep uploading it each time I want to use it?

No, Cobwebs Online remembers all of the images you have uploaded and saves them in your own folder. These images will be visible in the "clipart" list on step 4 - by selecting and viewing them here you can choose to put them on any of your pages. Your own images will always appear at the top of the list. If some of the images are faulty and you want them removing from your list e-mail the system administrator on cobwebs@bridgend.gov.uk.

I just updated my site but then when I went to check it, the updates hadn’t taken place and just the old content was there - what is going wrong?

Have you gone through the entire updating process by clicking ‘Next’ until the system tells you your site has been updated? If you don’t go through the entire process then the system will not be able to save any changes, and unfortunately you will have to do them again!

I want to change my e-mail address / organization name / contact details but I can’t find anywhere to do it

Organization and contact details can only be changed by the system administrator. E-mail the administrator on cobwebs@bridgend.gov.uk if you want to get these updated.

I want to put my organization’s logo onto the website - I have a printed copy but how do I get it on to the website?

The first step is to get an electronic copy of the image. You may already have the image on computer somewhere, if not you need to get the image scanned in, using a scanner. Make sure the image does not appear too big on screen or this will ruin the look of your website. The image then needs saving as a JPG or GIF file and must be under 40kb in memory. If you are unsure how to go about getting this done, contact your local library. (Print out this FAQ and take it with you). Once you have an electronic copy of your image in the correct format and size email it to cobwebs@bridgend.gov.uk where it will be loaded on to the system. Once you receive confirmation from Cobwebs, you will then be able to select it from the clipart list at step 4 and use it on your web pages. The image will only be available to you unless you ask Cobwebs to make it available to other organisations.

I’ve lost the project agreement form and can’t find how to get another - help!

Click on the project agreement form. Print this page, fill in the form and send it to: Cobwebs, Bridgend Library and Information Service, Coed Parc Library, Park Street, Bridgend. CF31 4BA

Some of the pages on my site won’t display, instead an error message says "The web page requested cannot be found on this server"

There are two possibilities here. To begin with, can you see ANY of your web pages? If you can but there are also some that you can’t see then it is likely that a technical error has occurred. E-mail the system administrator on cobwebs@bridgend.gov.uk if this is the case. If you can’t see any of your webpages then have you sent your project agreement form back? If not, the only way you can view your pages is by logging into the site as if to update it and then to go through each step until it says "View Your WebSite" - this will enable you to see that your web site is working - it won’t be visible to the rest of the World until you send in your project agreement form. If you have sent in your form, send an e-mail to the system administrator telling them the problem, and stating that you HAVE sent in a project agreement form.

The image I have put onto my website looks too big - how do I get it smaller?

You need to use a piece of graphics software which will resize images. If you don’t have access to anything like this, contact your local telecentre or computerised community ( to find your local facility go to www.telecentres.com). Once you are happy with the size of your image, upload it to the system as you did originally, and select it for your page.

What if I don’t have a computer?

There is a large network of organisations in Bridgend County Borough that provide community access to the Web and E-mail and all Bridgend County Borough Libraries now give access to the Internet. You can use these publicly accessible computers to create and update your website, and can set up a web based e-mail account so that you qualify for the project. E-mail Cobwebs on cobwebs@bridgend.gov.uk for more details.

What if I don’t have e-mail?

Its helpful to have an e-mail address because when people find your web site electronically they also need to be able to contact you electronically. You can get a free web based e-mail account from lots of different companies - go to www.emailaddresses.com to find a comprehensive listing of them.

When I type in my username and password the system tells me "You have been denied access to this page" - what do I do next?

To begin with, you need to close down your browser (the piece of software you are using to look at the Web) . Once you have done this, go to the front page of www.cobwebs.uk.net and try logging in again, taking care to type in the correct username and password. Remember, the password field is case sensitive, so for example, 'dog' is different from 'Dog'. If you still cannot get access to your website, e-mail the system administrator on cobwebs@bridgend.gov.uk telling them what password and username you are using to log on.

Who can use Cobwebs Online?

Any voluntary or community group based in Bridgend County Borough.
